MONTHLY MEETING
WHAKATANE HOSPITAL BOARD
GENERAL AFFAIRS
The monthly meeting of the Wha kntane Hospital Board was held in the Borough Council Chambers. Mr J. W. Sumner presiding over Mrs A. McCracken, Messrs A. F. Mc Gougan, C. A. Suckling, F. J. Sav age, F. J. Burt, L. Buddie, R. W. Schofield. Messrs F. Prideaux and T. A. Bridger, Secretary and Assistant Secretary respectively, and Dr Tewslcy Dawson, Medical Superintendent, also attended. Christmas Cheer. The chairman said that the dance held in the Taneatua Hall for Christmas Cheer had realised S.l'2 and tliis had been forwarded. The Matron had received one or two donations toward the same fund. Mr Sumner moved a vote of thanks to the people of Taneatua and others for donations. Paths at Hospital. Mr C. A. Suckling said that lie had A'ls>ted the Hospital and the Medical Superintendent had mentioned to him that it would lie advisable to lar-seal the back 'footpath and the tennis courts. Ol particular concern, however, were the cinder covered paths. Dr Dawson had told him that the dust blew into the kitchen and the hospital and was a serious problem. After discussion the matter wa:-; left with Mr Suckling wilh poAver to act. Doctor for Natives. The appointment by the Health Department of a doctor for the Maoris in the district was the subject of favourable comment by the board. It was stated that the ap>poinlee, Dr. Maaka, had already commenced his duties and was resid ing at Taneatua. The board is not responsible for any expenditure in connection with this scheme. Extension of Annexe. The question of the extension of the annexe was brought forward by t-he Medical Superintendent. The back portion of this building was a disgrace and the sterilising room shocking. "It doesn't give anyone a fair chance to work." said Dr Dawson. He suggested that it would be a good move to prepare plans for the extension of the annexe. It was moved by Mr Schofield and seconded by Mrs McCracken that the architect draft plans for consideration at the next meeting of the board. Gift of Ambulance. Mr Suckling detailed a meeting of the Local Bodies Representative Committee formed for the purpose oi' considering the best type,, of ambulance to purchase with funds raised in the district. Mr Sumner said that the people responsible should be thanked for 'he gift of the ambulance and it was moved that the Finance Committee go into the question of administration and housing and report to the next meeting.
