WAIMANA NOTES

SCHOOL FANCY DRESS DANCE

(Beacon Correspondent) The Waimana Hall was the scene of a very bright and .jolly evening recentlj 7 , the function being the annual school fancy dress dance. Ihe evening opened with the Grand March, the children in their fancy costumes made a very bright scene, aIL looking most attractive. The folk dances and items given by the children received great applause, the teachers Mr Bell and Miss Miller deserve great credit for the performance and conduct of the children during the evening. The dance music was contributed by Mrs A. Wardlaw and Mr J. Perfect and Miss M. Wardlaw obliged with an extra. Mr H. K: Bell acted as M.C. and Mr R. Morton kindly took the door.

The Monte Carlo dances were enjoyed by the children, the adults novelty dance being Avon by Mrs Mannion and Mr Rust. A box of sweets for competition was Avon by Mr Dick Boynton.

After a dainty supper had been served by the married ladies, Mr Robert Wardlaw. on behalf of the parents and residents of Waimana, asked Miss J. Miller, who is leaving

the school to take lip a position at Raurimu, to accept a cheque with their best wishes and congratulated Miss Miller on her promotion.

Miss Ngaire Mitchell on behalf of the school pupils presented Miss, Miller with a beautiful suitcase and Helen Woolfield and Nola Rust presented their teacher with a bouquet ajid shoulder spray.

Miss Miller in well chosen words thanked all for the gifts and kind, wishes and said her stay at Waimana had been a most pleasant one,. The details of the folk dances are as follows: Senior pupils, 'Brigh' ton Camp,' 'Gathering Peaeods," 'Ruftv Tufty,' 'Mage on a Cue' 'Gal lopedc,' 'If all the AVorkl were Paper.' Junior pupils: 'Pop goes the Weasel,' 'Sellenger Round,' 'Epping Forest' solos, Maria Boynton, Monica Boynton; recitations, 'If you meet a Fairy' by Heather Bell: 'My l)og' Douglas Wardlaw: 'The Watchmaker's Shop' Nola Rust. Songs and choruses were given by the senior and junior pupils, and tap dances and Iris Jig were very well danced by several of Miss Walton's pupils. Miss Joyce Hodgson gave a splendid exhibition of the Sword Dance, and looked very smart in her Highland costume.
