DRUNKENNESS AND MISCHIEF GOVERNMENT DAMAGED James Shannon, b its Imi aw, aged 58 appeared before Messrs G. BSrabant and C. G. Lucas, J's.P., in the Police Court last Saturdajr morning charged with being drunk in a pub , lie place, having twice previously been convicted within the last six i months. A second charge of coin-, mitting mischief by damaging Government property was also preferred . Constable F. M. Fuller said that' accused was a statutory third offender for drunkenness. Placed fn , the cell at the Police Station, accused became violent and had to be confined in the padded cell. Shannon had damaged a coal scuttle valued at 10/6 and smashed a pane of glass worth 5/6."." There was no--thing of a serious nature known against accused but he had five previous convictions for drunkeness. Shannon said that he had been working in the country and had come to town in order to buy provisions and clothing. He had had one or two drinks and as they were . the first for nine weeks they hacl affected him. He regretted causing the damage. "You have had quite a few convictions for drunkenness," said the Bench, "and you would be advised to leave the drink alone in the future." Accused was fined £3 on the first charge and £1 on the second. Hewas ordered to pay 16s, the value of the coal scuttle and pane of glass.
