EDGECUMBE FAREWELL
LOCAL MEN ENLIST
COMPLIMENTARY GATHERING HELD
Messrs Con Sainlv and Ernie Rogers two well known and extremely popular members of the Edgecumbe sporting fraternity were recently Au Revolred by a gathering of over (50 Avell wishers presided over by Mr H. C. Carter.
The function was in the form of a smoke concert- very capably inaugurated by Mr Howard Cresswell and this was no less successful than previous similar efforts controlled by this efficient organiser. Whatever life has in store for the honoured guests and that includes the bright lights of 'Lil ole Lunnon'and the doubtful sprees associated with Gaj r Paree, these men are not going to easily forget their big moment or hear so many pleasant words directed at them —not unless Sergeant Majors have changed. However those who have had the fortune to be in close contact with Messrs Rogers and Sainty will agree that the very fine speech of appraisal delivered by Mr Frank Reynolds was fully earned. Both have been on the official and playing list of the Edgecumbe Tennis Club and the committee of the Rangitaiki Rugby Union while their services to the recently formed Hockey Association needs no commenting on.
Mr Stan Jenkins on the piano again led the gathering to the attack of Tipperary, Blighty and Madamoiselle I'roro Armenticrs, and "We'll hang the washing on the Sieg fried Line." Incidentally to the observant. it was plainly noticeable that the washing could not have been as wet as some of the songsters. Gundy Moore's own composition, 'The Warrior' and 'When Hori joined the Air Force' dedicated to Jack Stewart and Hori Carter respectively were well received as was a comedy sketch ])nt over by Messrs Carter, Sainty and Moore. The usual toasts were honoured in the approved fashion the proposers and responders being Messrs H. 1,, and T. Anderson, E. Xaumann, G. Turnbull, W. Goldsmith. V. C. Moore, S. Jenkins and F. Simpson. The Beacon joins all in wishing Messrs Sainty and Rogers every success in the military sphere with a safe and speedy return.
