CATTLE DIE

YEARLING HEIFERS POISONED BY PRIVET Poisoning by a privet hedge occurred on a farm in the Cheltenham district, Manawatu. recently. The far mcr reported having lost five yearling heifers, and several others were palpably siclv. Two of the animals were killed for examination purposes, and the post mortem revealed intense inflammation of the fourth stomach and portion of the intestines. From this it Avas assumed that the heifers had been poisoned. The usual inquiries and a thorough search of the paddocks, etc., Ave re made for lead and other materials of a poisonous nature, but nothing could be foxmd. A privet hedge (Ligistrum species) surrounding the house and bordering on to tlio paddock in Avhieh the heifers had been grazing was then inspected, and it Avas apparent that the stock had been eating it freely. As the hedge was in the berry-bear-ing stage it was decided to submit a specimen to the Systematic Botanist for examination, and in the reply he stated: "The plant is poisonous, although it is not clear from the literature just Avhich stage is most toxic, the berries being suspected."
