81-MONTHLY MEETING REPORTS RECEIVED Messrs ,T. W. Sumner (Chairman) W. R. Boon, A. F. McGougan, G. Tickner, G. A. Brabant, and R. Ruddick were present for the bi-month-ly meeting of the Whakatane Harbour Board held on Friday. Leave of absence was granted Messrs C.T. Smith and J. A. Mitchell. The minutes of the ordinary meeting of October 6tli Avere confirmed. The Secretary, Mr C. G. Lucas, reported that the Marine Department was not prepared to permit of the 'Port Whakatane' being used for hire to White Island, the department maintaining that the vessel was not suitable. In commenting on this, Mr McGougan said that it was hard to understand the department's decision as there were few boats as good as the 'Port Whakatane.' After discussion, it was moved that investigation be made into 'the conditions governing the issue of licenses to other launches on the coast, and if favourable, the application for a permit should be renewed . Paper Pulp. The secretary reported that Whakatane Paper Mills were importing Canadian pulp. The wharfage rate for inwards paper pulp was but in view of the special rate for outwards of 1 /'- per ton, inwards pulp had been charged on the same figure. When fixing the rate, the board had not taken into consideration the possibility of pulp being imported. The secretary's action was confirmed and the wharfage schedule amended. Wairere Stream. The Consulting Enginee 1 * to the Board, Mr C. H. Brebner, said that the contractor had mei with difficulty in the removing of the silt and rubble from the month of the Wairere stream, and had found it necessary to use explosives for loosening the material, of which a considerable amount remained. Tt was suggested by a member that the work could be postponed, but Mr Brabant considered that it should be proceeded with. It was resolved that the matter be left with the chairman and engineer, with power to act. The reports of the secretary and engineer w T ere received.
