COUNCIL COMMENDS
COMMITTEE
At the meeting of the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday, the chairman,. Mr C. L. Burnett, reported on the circumstances surrounding the purchase of a Trackson Shovel and attachments at a price greatly reduced from the figure demanded by the agents for the manufacturers. The original price quoted for the machine and attachments, was £2218. The Plant Committee, said the chairman, after considering all aspects of the matter, such as the vendor's terms clause regarding rate of exchange and dollar conversion rates and the discount offered, had decided to make an offer to the vendors, Messrs Gough, Gough and Hamer, Ltd, of £2033 cash in full settlement, payment to be made within seven daj\s of delivery—equipment to be delivered free to Whakatane. In a'd-* dition the committee demanded free service parts for ninety days and free mechanical instruction for one week. The Auckland representative of Gough, Gough, Hamer Ltd., Mr Harries, had waited on the committee and the offer had been handed to him for communication to his principals. Mr Harries stated that his company would not entertain the offer. "However," said the chairman., "the company wired their acceptance of the price next day." Cr Luxton, in moving that the report of the Plant Committee be adopted, said that the committee was to be commended on purchasing the machine at a figure considerably below that which, the Council at first thought it would have to pay.
Cr McCready said that he had pleasure in seconding the motion, and remarkad that the committee should be congratulated on saving the County such a sum. Saving in Costs. The County Engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, reported that the machine had been delivered in Whakatane on Tuesday,, November Ist. It was taken to Pekatahi and two of the county staff (excluding the mechanic) were instructed in its care and operation by the expert who brought the machine clown. The machine has been used in loading gravel and has put up a remarkable performance. As a detail of the reduction in costs through the purchase of thii Trackson Shovel, it is estimated that the saving per cubic yard on the road, is 3s 6}£d. The cost per cubic yard with the machine in use for loading four trucks, and a six mile trip for the lorries is Is and under the old methods, os od.
