Operations at the Whakatane Paper Mills had to be. suspended at 8 a.m. on Wednesda\ r owing to a short age of coal and logs. Supplies were made available and the men resumed at 4 p.m. yesterday. To Enter Camp. Yet another gentleman prominent in public life has volunteered and boon accepted for service. Captain Brown, of Opoliki, who has been a member of v the Opotiki Borough Council for some time., is to enter camp early this month. Meeting Abandoned. The weekly meeting of the Whakatane Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club scheduled for last Wednesday evening had to be abandoned owing to the inclement weather. The next fixture will be held on Wednesday, December 6th. j Cells at Police Station. Some time ago the BEACON stated that the Whakatane Police Station was one of the finest buildings of this nature in New Zealand. The same applies to the cells for prisoners. Heated and well ventilated, and finished in a nice toning of grey, the cells cannot fail to please "the ij.imates. Road Improvements. The deviation of the TliorntonEdgecumbe Road has been completed. Widening and straightening has been carried out on the Matata-Ro-toma Road, and at the Rotoma end
considerable improvement is being effected. Widening at the top of the Tunanui Hill,, Wainui Road, is steadily progressing. Tennis Postponed. Rain on Sunday last marred the visit of the Taneatua Tennis Club to Te Puke for the Dunlop Shield match, and in consequence the fixture had to be postponed. A mencement was made with the ladies singles but they had to be abandoned. The visitors were entertained at lunch and afterwards at the residence of Mr and Mrs.H. Anderson. Waiohau Stock Paddock. A recommendation from the Works Committee that Mr Dunphy be appointed Stock Paddock agent at [ Waiohau and that the paddock charges be as follows: Cattle,, 3d per head, 24 hours, first 16, with mini j mum 2s; over 16 head 2d per head for 24 hours; with maximum 10s. Sheep: 250 head 5s per day; over 250 head, 10s per day was approved by the County Council at the monthly meeting held on Tuesday.
Notice Boards. At the monthly meeting of the Whakatane County Council held on Tuesday it was decided to erect notice boards at Ohope Beach warning campers that they are not allowed to light fires within sixty yards of a road, private by-way, dwelling, or any building. Cr McCready said that something would also have to be done about the smashing of boards previously erected at the beach. He said that some people regard the boards as targets for rocks. Bay of Plenty Rainfall. The wettest place in the Bay of Plenty last month was Katikati, with a fall of 8.05 inches. Other recordings compiled by the Government Meteorologist show that Katikati had rain on 15 days, but rain fell at Whakatane on 18 days although the total fall was only 3.91 inches. At Edgecumbe the recording was 3.58, Rotoehu Plantations 4.48, 'at Lake Rotoma 5.53, at Sophia Street, Rotorun, 2.86, at Whakarewarewa 2.46, at Lichfield 3.13, at Upper Atiamuri 2.72, at Kaingaroa Plains 3.43, Taupo 2.05 and at Murupara 2.54 inches. ,
