THE OHOPE FIRE MENACE
It is indeed pleasing to note the prompt action of the Whakatane County Council in grappling with the fire danger at Ohope Beach, and we wish to congratulate Cr. McCready on the stand he has rnade to ensure the introduction of protective measures in future. While the Council made no move to appoint Eire Wardens or Inspectors, there remained a very real threat to the beautiful Pohutukawa forest which covers the cliff face. It is noteworthy too, that the council has also decided to take more vigourous. steps to warn visitors against the lighting of indiscriminate fires, and also to clear, all county land of inflammable scrub and grass growths. Only by the institution of such measures can a growing beach resort, such as we have at Ohope, be afforded some guarantee of protection which will perpetuate the priceless asset of the native Pohutukawas,
