ACTIVITIES IN BAY OF PLENTY

RALLY AT TAURANGA

Scouting is on the up-grade in the Bay of Plenty and the last registration showed a considerable increase in numbers, 203 Scouts, lift Cubs, 22 Officers, and 57 Non-Commission-ed workers being registered.

The troop at Taneatua has been reformed under the leadership of Mr F. Mead, whose position whilst on active service is being taken by Mr Shearer. A. new troop has commenced and is functioning well at Paengaroa and a native troop is being formed at Judea, Tauranga.

The Scout Commissioners are experiencing difficulties in obtaining suitable officers and the position is aggravated by the war. Whakatane is fortunate in having the services of a Canadian Scoutcr in Mr McTavish and Miss Bl'ythe will be of great assistance with the Cubs. The troops at Onepu, Paroa and\ Poro Poro are particularly well manned. Opotiki is well controlled although no senior warrant has been issued, and the officer at present in charge, Mr R. C. Brownie, may be prepared to accept the definite responsibility. Miss J. C. Mountjoy will look after the interests of the Pack. Te Puke has fallen on quiet times, but in the hands of a capable patrol leader under the supervision of exScoutmaster Lay, the troop carries

New Hall,

The combined committee of Guides and Scouts in Tauranga now possess their own hall, which is probably one of the finest of its class in the Dominion. A rough shell of iron was bought, the building was raised on a two-feet concrete wall, was floor ed and lined and now Is a hall of which the two organisations are proud. The windows look out on the Waikareao Estuary and the position is ideal for a troop of Sea Scouts, when a leader can be found. Th'c building, which is now in use, will opened on the ninth of December. Scout Rally. These particulars of the Scout Rally held recently at Tauranga, have been supplied by Commissioner Christian. The following troops took part. Tauranga, under Scoutmaster Ellery. Whakatane, under Scoutmaster Mc TavishParoa, under District Scoutmaster Miller. Opotild, under Scoutmaster R. C. Brownie. Te Puke, under Patrol Leader Brownlee. Maketu, under Scoutmaster A. C. Wright. Onepu, under Scoutmaster T. J. Watson. Taneatua. Paengaroa. under Scoutmaster A. C. Wright, Junr. Poroporo, under Scoutmaster A. Boswell. Cub Packs. Opotiki, under Cubmistress Miss Webb. Tauranga, under Cubmistress Miss Bamberry." Te Puke, under Cubmistress Miss L. Burt. Whakatane, under District Scoutmaster S. Miller. Paroa, under District Scoutmaster S. Miller. Training Commissioner Cooksey, Commissioners Southon and Christian, District Scoutmaster D. S, M. Miller and Rally Chief Grinder were also in attendance. The competitions resulted in a Avin for Tauranga Scouts in the I Boyd Cup after close competition, AAiiile Te Puke AA'on the Tiki Trophy for athletic events, their team proving much too good for their opponents.

The Tauranga Cubs retained tHe BoAvyer Shield.
