YOUTHS ARRESTED

THEFT FROM SHOP INCIDENT AT OPOTIKI Three youths were smartly arrested by the Opotilti Police early on Friday morning in connection with the theft of a car and the theft of goods from the window of the Farmers' Trading Company" in Opotiki. At about 7 o'clock Mrs G. Hamilton, of Okiere, Waioeka Gorge, telephoned the Opotiki police station, informing the police of the suspicious movements of three young men on the Waioeka Road. Mr Hamilton had spoken to the men who said they had left their car on the roadside, and were walking to Gisborne as they had run out of benzine. Const alile Rathie proceeded to -.he spot in a car, noticing the deserted veh- ~ icle on the side of the'road about 15 miles from Opotiki, bearing .an ™ Auckland registration number. Constable Rathie caught up with the youths six miles further on at.a spot four o*- five miles beyond Mr Hamilton's farm. The youths were arrested antl brought to Opotiki where they were questioned concerning the theft of a car from Onehunga. The car was a Morris S sports model, valued at £150, the property of Mr L. P. Spear Queen Street, Onehunga, and was stolen on the night of November 15. It was driven through Tauranga and Opotiki, where it arrved in the early hours of the morning. The 3'ouths, it is alleged, being M* hungry, attempted to force open the ■ front door of the Gash and Carry Department of the Farmers' Trad- , ing Company, but they were unsuccessful, only succeeding in braising the wood of the double doors. They then turned their attention to the window from which they took broken piece of glass, and, through, secured of choco-"? lates and three tins of peaches. It is probable that on account of the youth of the arrested men they will appear before the children's court. * - ■■
