DEFYING THE LAW
LONG LIST OF CONVICTIONS
LABOURER CHARGED
Appearing before Mr W. H. Freeman in the Police Court on Wednesday, Kennedy Lawson, single, labourer, pleaded guilty to charges of entering licensed premises whilst prohibited and procuring liquor.
Constable H. Hedley said that Lawson had a long list of previous convictions for the same offences and seemed to defy the police.
Mr Smith, who appeared for Lawson, admitted that his client had a large list against him but suggested that the two charges could be reduced to one as the offences were committed on the same day and both referred to the one thing. He said that Lawson was a hard-Avorking labourer, befng employed by the Public Works Department on roadmaking. The hot weather had produced a thirst and Lawson had taken a risk. The Magistrate; Apparently he's working for the hotels and he is not the only one cither.
Lawson was convicted and fined £5 and £1 Is costs on the count of procuring liquor and ordered to paycosts on the other charge. When Mr Smith asked for lime to pay the line, the Magistrate remarked that as Lawson seemed to have money for beer he should be able to pay the. fine. A month was allowed.
