Destruction of U-Boats
WINSTON CHURCHILL'S REASSURANCE Mr Winston Churchill in the House of Commons stated that during the first six weeks of the war, the official figures revealed that 13 submarines had been sunk, 5 damaged and probably sunk, and several others damaged. The French navy had also destroyed several vessels. The submarine campaign had been intensified during the week-end and four more ships had been sunk in the Atlantic (two British and two French). To date 174,000 tons of shipping had been lost by submarines or mines. Britain had 104,000 tons of new shipping under construction, while 29,000 had been captured.
MORE HOPEFUL VIEW FINNISH-SOVIET RELATIONS The Spokesman for the Finnish foreign office stated last night that a more hopeful view had arisen in the negotiations with Russia, and his Government was prepared to go as far as possible to avoid, armed eon diet. From the Italian radio, it is learned that the terms of the Russo-Turk-ish are that neither will take part in any active aggression against the other, and that Turkey will undertake to close the Dardanelles against all belligerent warships
