Delivery of Beacon. The BEACON will be published as usual on Labour Daj r , Monday, October 23rd, and therewwil y be the usual delivery to town subscribers. Owing to the fact that the Rural Delivery service will not be running it will be impossible i.o send the paper out to country readers, who will receive their copies on Tuesday. Chairs for Councillors. In place of the wobbly old cane and wooden chairs in which mem- I bers of the Whakatane County Council have squirmed for several years, and many of which arc now showing signs of disintegrating, heavy upholstered chairs have been acquired. The county councillors have thus followed the borough's lead, and their long hours round the council table will be so miicn more comfortable. A. E. Cook Enlists. Better known to New Zealandevs in football uniform, but now in n different role, A. E. (Bert), Cooke has gone into camp at Narrow Neck as a gunner attached to the 18th Anti-Aircraft Battery. There was a mild stir at a public dance at Rotorua on Saturday night when two police constables made their appearance at the doorway and shortly afterwards escorted a young man from the hall. It is not known on what charge the youth was arrested, but it is presumed that it was in connection with the recent regulations prohibiting drink in and around dance halls. Pensions Paid Out on Friday. The post office notifies, that alternative arrangements for the paying out of pensions during the coming week-end have been finalised.«ln view of Monday being a closed holiday, pensions usually paid, out on that day will-be paid on Friday, October 20th. It is thought that the recipients will appreciate this arrangement, which enables them to have a little ready cash to spend during the holiday.
