OBITUARY

WELL KNOWN MAORI PASSES

The death has occurred .of Mrs Mihimere Rangihika, of Whakatane, who was a direct descendant of IVlokai, one of the chiefs of the Ngati Pukeko tribe who was a signatory

the famous Treaty of Waitangi. The late Mrs Rangihika, Avas born in Whakatane where she spent the major part of Tier life, and where she was known and respected by a wide circle of friends Maori and Pakeha alike. As a young woman she saw the development of the town and district and has watched the growth of the centre from a small trading point to the important business area it is to-day. She married Mr Rangihika who survives lier and reared a family of six children, the eldest of whom James Avent to military cam]) during the Great War. Mrs Rangihika was buried yesterday, a large gathering of natives taking part in the ceremonies at Pahou.
