RATES AT MAKETjiJ
At a meeting in Te Puke between the Executive of the Maketu Centennial Committee and the County Council, Mr Tai Mitchell, chairman of the Arawa Trust Board, pointed out that since 1936 the Arawa Trust Board had paid, on behalf oif, its properties and other just under £1000 in rates in Maketu alone Further, the Native Department had constructed several miles of road which was used extensively by the public, and had also given several areas for pumice and gravel.
This amount of £1000 did not include rates paid by other Maoris or Europeans in Maketu.
ARAPUNI ANGLING .Fairly good bags of trout were secured by fishermen in the Waikato on Sunday, when the season in the Auckland Acclimatisation Society's
district opened. Conditions quite favourable during the morning but a cold south-westerly wind in the evening spoiled fly fishing. Despite the benzine restrictions, there were large parties of anglers out on various parts of the Waikato River, the most popular reaches being those above the headrace at Arapuni ano along the shingle bank below the dam. The Tc Awamutu bridge near the dam was lir>ed with fishermen at
daybreak and 15 trout were taken there during the morning. Belo'v Arapuni 18 fish, the heaviest were landed on. minnow or spoon, and all were in good order for so early in the season. The average weight of the catches was about 31b.
