FIGHT MOSQUITOES
Sir, —As one who for a number of years has spent summer nights either stifling with closed windows, battling against invading hordes J of mosquitoes with the aid of a spray gun, I wonder whether we could not make some effort here in Whakatane to reduce the numbers of the pest this summer.. It may not be practicable to completely rid us of them, but it is a fact that if we attack the breeding places we will greatly diminish their! numbers. Mosquitoes breed in swamps and also in accumulations of water in such objects as tanks, bottles, broken ,o]d tyres—in fact in any which will hold a few drops of water for a few days. A little oil sprayed on some of the swamps and drains would improve matters considerably, —and this could be a matter for the borough council, while the individual householder could pick up any rubbish which might hold water, maka sure that the lid of his water tank is tight fitting, and see that spouting is not blocked with leaves and holding water. I would like to see the borough council make some move in this matter.. Why tolerate the? pests when they are quite easy £f> eradicate or at least can be very con- r siderably controlled? f Yours etc., CLEAN-UP.
