ACTING PRIME MINISTER'S , , REPLY RAP FOR OPOTIKI The following letters have been received from Mr A. G. Hultquist, member for the district, for publication, says the "Opotiki News": To Mr Hultquist from the Hon P. Fraser, Acting Prime Minister: "I am in receipt of your letter of j the 1J tli instant enclosing a communication and resolutions forwarded to you by the County Clerk at Opotikj. Copies of these resolutions were sent to me under cover of a letter which I recently received from Mr Merry, and for your information a copy of my reply is attached hereto. The copy of tlie letter forwarded to the county clerk, Opotiki, reads as follows: I I am in rcccipt of your letter of the 9th instant enclosing copies of j resolutions passed at & meeting of residents of Opotiki and adjoining districts held on the sth idem, when the position aficcting the construction of a railway between Taneatua and Opotiki was discussed. "In reply, I have to say that there was given to the Member for the Dis* trict, to be read at the meeting, a statement of the Government's intentions regarding this matter, but I understand from him that he was given no opportunity of reading it. In the circumstances I can only ie_ fer you to Mr Hultquist for information, concerning the statement in question, "As you are aware, in such matters the Member for the District con-: stitutes the channel for communication between the Government and the local body or other party con. cerned. "The request conveyed in the re- ! sclution regarding the State Highway between Opotiki and the railhead at Taneatua will have consideration at the earliest opportunity."
