Conolly (Wha_. katane) at the fortnightly meeting of the Whakatane Rugby Union executive held at Taneatua on Tuesday night. Those present AA r ere the president, Mr W. S. Henderson, Mr F. J. Peebles (secretary), Messrs J. Hohapata (■Paroa) y T. Gee, W. Sisam (Tan.* eatua),. *J. r. White (Whakatane), J. Brown (Waimana), L. Ormon.l (referees). THE SHIELD. "'ls there any business arising out of the minutes'" said Mr Henderson! "We'll have the report from the man agers why the shield isn't in Whakatane-" said one delegate amid laughter. They Avere cold certainties beaten said Mr Henderson. However they must accept defeat gracefully though they AA'ere naturally disappointed. Mr Henderson said the Tauranga, gate was *168' 19s, arid their share £28 3s 3d. "The Parata Cup game Avith Opotiki showed a profit of £2 6s Bd. The Dunderdale Cup balance sheet showed a Whakatane share of £28 6s 9d. Advice was received from the New Zealand Rugby Union to the effect that the Bay of Plenty Maoris AA'ould play the Fijians. The team Avill assemble on the morning of the match It is to be chosen by the Bay of Plenty selectors, and Avill be announced in the coming week. The action of the emergency committee in arranging the Rotorua match last Saturday, thereby fulfilL ing an obligation Avas confirmed. SATURDAYS, GAMES Fixtures for Saturday are:— SENIORS. Paroa v Waiman a at Waimana. Whakatane v Taneatua (Bracken Cup) at Whakatane. Poroporo a bye. JUNIORS. Paroa v Taneatua* at Taneatua (championship). Star v Poroporo (Wilson, Cup). Reserves v-Old Boys (Wilson Cup) The draw for the folloAving Saturday is to be published in next Wednesday's BEACON. A third grade A and B trial 'will be played on Saturday. JUNIOR REPS. The arranging of transport for the junior games at Opotiki or possibly Rotorua, was left in the hands of a committee to consist of Messrs W. iS. Henderson, and L. Ormond. The junior selectors AA r ere appointed managers for the junior team. Mr Hohapata asked for a donation iof not less than five guineas towards the travelling expenses of the Matatua team which Avouid be travelling to Ruatoria early next month to play for the Tainui Maniapoto Cup. The Tauranga, Opotiki and Rangitaiki unions wer e being asked fo r similar grants. The game AA'ould probably be played on September 2.
Mr Henderson pointed out that Rangitaiki- would now be playing for the Shield on September 2, and he did not think they would be able to get a strong Matatua team away. Mr Hohapata said the date could be arranged at a meeting of the tribes on Sunday. The ninth might suit. POWERFUL TEAM. Mr Henderson said that the Matatua tribes could field a powerful tean\ and he thought they had a getting the cup, which was a wonderful attraction, and wMfti' (IrAw 'big gates. Before the union could grant the money they wanted to be assured that the other sub-unions would act similarly, and also they wanted to be certain that they got the first challenge game at Whakatane ? provided the cup came to the Bay of Plenty. Mr Hohapata said that Whakatane was the headquarters of the Mat. atua district and he was certain that the games would be played here Mr Ormond' said he* was in favour of the grant provided the best possible team was sent away. A motion covering the points raised by Mr Henderson was parsed. BENEFIT GAMES. Mr Sisam ?nid that the day that Taneatua had a bye they would play in Whakatano against the Buccanor some other team, in aid of the Football or the ambulance Mr Hend^r«.-r> n suggested September 2 as a benefit day for the Queen,
to whom the entire net profits Could be devoted. ,As many matches as possible &ould be played in Whaka_ tane, and a game could be arranged "for the Buccaneers. ' Mr Ormond mentioned that the annual meeting of the Athletic Club would be held on September 20. He asked delegates to speak to their club members and ask them to come along. Mr Henderson said that if outside clubs had representatives in the Athletic, club he did not see why they could not stage meetings In the oth_ er centres. That was the practice* when he was connected with the Rotorua Club.
