POULTRY
ADHERENCE TO LAYING TYPE Utility Black Orpingtons can he mproved as to their laying qualities l)y a more strict adherence to laying type, comparative closeness of featner, and by careful selection from good laying birds. It is unwise to + i-y and secure a highly productive layer and top-notch table specimen in th'' same bird. Some points must be sacrificed if special development in another direction is desired. But it possible to obtain good egg producers that are also good table birds, especially if the females are chosen for egg production, and the males with a little better body type for table purposes. A lanky bird of'any breed is rarely 1 a really good tablebird, and still more seldom a firstclass Jayer_ though in both respects it is inadvisable to go to the other extreme. Poultry plants which cater for dayold chicks, or settings of eggs, will now be at their busiest, and right up to the end of September, at least, will be going at top.
