WHITEBAIT ON SALE
CATCHES EARLY THIS YEAR Earlier this season, than last year, whitebait ha 3 been appearing on the iocal market in small quantities for. the last fortnight or so, and has been sclliig at about 4s a pound. There were no supplies in July last year, because the Tarawera River tha source of early catches, was flpodeJs and discoloured owing to rains. However conditions were better for the opening of the fishing this yearAbout liilbs is the largest single parcel which so far has been offered for sale. The first supplies always come front the Tarawera, as there is no general run in th» Whakat«ne until much later ; n the veaj. This would seen*, to ind'eale that the breeding of the fi-h is in the neighbourhood of ■\fatnta, possibly in the swampy ligoon country a; these backwaters answer the requirements of s bait which, ;.s far r>r rcca'led. are rush-covered flats arv.l brackish tulal wr.t?r. A fev/ small schools of white bait have been, seen -in the Whakatan-i but. they were not in any commercial Quantity.
