MATTERS OF INTEREST VALUE OF STATE INSTALLED DRAINAGE Among other matters the report of the works conpnittce presented at the meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night, said that at its last meeting Cr W. Sullivan, chairman, reported with respect to the suggestion for better lighting at pedestrian crossing at the foot of Domain that mercury vapour .street lights would short 1/ supersede the present fittings. The new lights would he so spaced as adequately to light the crossing but to eliminate glare to motorists coming down Domain Road. It was resolved to await the installation of the new light fittings when the position would he further reviewed if necessary. In response to an enquiry, the Town Clerk of New Plymouth advised particulars of pedestrian crossing slabs with reflectors, which were in use at New Plymouth. It was rtsolved to recommend that a footpath be constructed in Mat'atua Street, and in Toroa Street from the intersection oi Matatua Street and Wa,irere Street. Licenses—Shooting Galleries. W. . Morris made an. application for license to conduct shooting gallery to be erected on vacant section next Wright's billiard saloon. I It was recommended that permission be granted subject police approval of the shooting gallery when erected. Drainage: The chairman reported upon the failure of the drainage system in Soutar's Avenue installed by the Department of Housing Construction and it was resolved to recommend that the council write to the department advising it of the position and pointing out that it ob jected at the time to the proposed system; that the borough foreman be instructed to take levels to ascertain whether a fall to the King Street system exists.
It was recommended that the borough foreman be granted a ear allowance of £1 per week while the centennial park work is under way, commencing from June 7, 1939. FINANCE COMMITTEE At the last meeting of the finance committee of the Whakatane Borough Council it was recommended that accounts totalling £2343 5s 8d be passed for payment. It was also recommended that the electrical engineer's ear allowance bo increased by £10 per annum.
