ON-SIDE RULE AWARDING OF TRIES The on_side rules, the position where the ball touches a referee, a touch judge or a spectator, and tha rules governing the awarding of are discussed this week. ON-SIDE RULE. *An off.side player becomes on-side: (a) When an, opponent carrying the ball has run five yards. (i>) When the ball has been kicked by an opponent. (c) When an opponent has intentionally touched the ball, provided such opponent does not catch or father it. (d) When one of his own team has run in front of him either carrying the ball or after having kicked the ball when behind him. Such kicker must be in the field of play to pu> the oifside player onsidc, though he is not debarred from previously following up in, touch. LAW (30) BALL TOUCHING REFEREE. If the ball or a player carrying it touch the referee in the field of pl» v a scrum shall be ordered at that place. If the ball in a player's possession, or a player cairying it, touches the referee in that players in-goal, a touch-down shall be awarded; and if the ball, though not held by a player, touch the referee, a touch judge, or a a toucndown shall be awarded, provided a touch-down would otherwise have been obtained, or the boll would have gone dead, and if the i c sue is in doubt when the ball touches a spectator, a touch-down shall be awarded to the defending team. Tf the ball, 'which in plav in in-goal at eithcs end, but not held by plaverL tonic h the referee, a touch judge or a spectator, a try shall be awarded at that place, provided an attacking player would otherwise have scored it: and if the issue is in doubt when the ball touches a spectator a try shall be awarded at that place to the attacking team. LAW 26. TRY. A try is scored: If a player, pass, knock or kick the ball into his own in-goal and an opponent first ground it. If a team in a scrum push the other team over the latter's goal Imc and first ground the ball in in-goal. If the defending team ground it, a touch down shall be awarded. If a player: ground the ball in bis opponent's in-goal and pick it up again a, try shall be awarded where it was first grounded. The referee shall award a try if, in the opinion, one would undoubtedly hacv been obtained but for the unfair nlay or unlawful interference of the defending team. Such try shall be awarded between the goal posts. It docs not matter where the olTenco took place th? greatest possible penalty is to be awarded. Special attention is drawn to the fact that the referee must lie of the op'nion that a try would undoubtedly have been obtained. Where theie : s any doubt the try must not be awarded, however serious the offence nay have been. A try may be scored by a player \\ho is in touch, or touchJn.goal provided he is not carrying the ball. The referee shrll allow a touchdown when he is unable to decide which team first grounded the ball.
