COUNCIL'S TRIBUTE
LATE'MR W. REID S TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS'OF SERVICE d . >- Feeling tributes were pa-id to the .'.i memory of the late Mr W. Re id, \ member and Chairman of the Whakar tane County Council for many years, and a resolution of sympathy to bis * d relatives was passed at yesterday's e meeting Of the council. The iate chair d ma,n's period of service was also eutcrcd on the minutes and the council v stood in silcnce for a few moments. The chairman, Mr J. L. Burnett^ e sa'd that Mr Reid came on to the 1. 'council at a time when the district was in p, very different condition than it was to-day. He did a great deal of work on horscback and foot and the council owed him their gratitude. They would miss Cr Reid from the council table. He had always been a great friend, and when anyone i« trouble went to Mr Reid they always got a cheery wclcome and good vice. Walter Reid, added Mr Burnett, was one of nature's gentlemen.. He moved: ''That the council convey to Mr M. Reid and his brothel* and sisters its sympathy in the passing of their father Cr W. Reid, and that the council express to Mr M. Reid their appreciation of his father's lifelong services in the Interest of the Whakatane Countv Council." Cr F. J. Burt said he felt Cr Reii's loss very greatly. It only seemed the other day that Cr Reid came on to the council. In 1904 they had been voung men together. He knew that from the time Cr Reid came on tf> the council his heart and soul had k 'been in the work which had beb;i most arduous. The Matata Riding then stretched from Matata to Peka_ tahi and two members were in charge of the area which six or seven repre_ l ' sented to-day. Cr Burt said he had proposed 01* seconded Cr Reid as chairman at 1 practically every annual meeting. 1 He had sat in the same oi l chair be--1 side him for many year.s and he felt the loss very greatly. Cr L. W. Luxton endorsed the 1 remarks of the other speakers. Cr 1 Reid had, devoted himself to the couu. cil's interests in a wonderful ' which perhaps had not been alto_ gether to his own benefit. He hoped ~ that another member of Mr Reid's " family would take up the work and carry on the traditions of public service he had established. 0 On the chairman's motion Cr Reid's " record of service from JOO4 to Is 3'> was placed on the council's minutes.
