WHAKATANE'S WATER
' SCHEME TO BE REVIEWED EXPERT ENGINEERING ADVICE A decision to ask Mr Worley, Avater ■works engineer to the Hamilton Bor.. iW v<ough Council, to examine the Wha. T katane water supply and make a full report on the situation, was taken; :i>y the YVhakatane Borough Council at its meeting on Monday night. The council is faced with the necessity. of extending the service to Hillcrest and purchasing neAV pi ant ? and Cr W. Sullivan- mentioned in this connection that a small loan might be necessary. The works committee felt that the had come when the whole quesrtion should be gone into. The bcr> Y ough engineer had recommended the V r purchase of a neAV pump at a cost of Jrnf £800 or £1000, there was the question - . 0 f wafer reticulation to Hillcrest and the construction of an additional ieservoir. The problems AA r ere sufficient "to warrant the engagement of a reliable engineer and the works committee thought it might be better to t get a practical, man engaged in local "body Avork. '.they thought that eithei the Hamilton or the Auckland engineer should be asked to giA'e a com--prehensive report. NEED FOR REVIEW. \ Cr Sullivan said the committee felt -that the Avater scheme needed review. "The question arose whether they were going to adhere to the present i source of supply and duplicate the reservoir capacity. The council had rights over the stream at Hillcrest •and its use cc-uld be considered. The position, was similar to the ■electricity undertaking in that they could not expect to find four or fn r e "thousand pounds to make provision to instjal a neAV pump out of reavenue . They wanted competent advice on the scheme and not amateur sugges_ tions. He thought that the present .scheme was the most suitable. LAUGHTER. There Avas laughter Avhen Cr F. "Prideaux said that that Avas an amateur suggestion. Cr Sullivan said that he ay as prepared to listen to a competent engineer on the matter. > He added that the old pump Avas "worn out and gaA~e great trouble when repairs AA-ere necessary recently. He had been astonished to . see the hard abrasive pumice sand that went through it. The brass fittings -could not be expected to stand up to that abuse, and he thought that if a neAA r pump Avas installed the makers should be told what sort of water it AA r ould have to -handle .so that they could build a suitable pump. A LOAN. ( He added that they could not continue taking the cost of the scheme -out of reA r enue, and that it migHt be necessary to ask for a small loan to •extend the system. Cr Sullivan moved that Mr Worley, Hamilton, should be asked to inspect the undertaking and bring •■dOAvn a comprehensiA'e report. Cr A. J.. Canning seconded the motion and ; It AA r as carried.
