HEADS PARK

SITE NEARLY CLEARED

PROGRESS OF JOINT SCHEMES

With most of the logs that cum. bcreil the foreshore burned, or split ready for burning and the growth cleared away, it is now possible to visualise quit e well the future layout of the Centennial Park to be constructed at The Heads. From a point near the Flat Rock within the river mouth a low concrete wall runs to the harbourmaster';; residence. Following the line of the present road a new road will be constructed with a concrete kerb and gutter separating i't from a footpath on, its river side. Between the footpath and the Avail the ground will be sloped down gently. This portion is the borough and county scheme. The road will run along in front of the signal station, and seaward"? of the station will be a half.aero parking area and lawn. This will be bounded by a stone wall, and this area forms the Harbour Board scheme Tenders have been called by the borough council for the supply and delivery of approximately 3500 cubic yards of approved earth filling for the scheme. The work of clearing the site and burning the logs is being done by the borough staff, supervised by Mr W. S. Henderson the foreman. 5 It seems that the completed scheme wMll give Whakatane a dignified and tidy "fron't door," and it is to be hoped that it will be the start of a general scheme for waterfront improvement.
