The Bay of Plenty Beacon Published Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. MONDAY, MAY 29th., 1939 WHAKATANE'S WINTER SHOW

An urgent appeal to the young farmers of the Whakatane district to support the forthcoming Winter Show has been issued by __ the Honorary Secretary of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Federation of the Young Farmers Clubs, Mr. dA. Taylor. The whole tenor of the appeal is worthy of recognition by every farmer who takes a pride in the production of his farm and is loyal to the district wherein it is situated. We take the greatest pleasure in reproducing it in part in the interests of the forthcoming agricultural feature, which is in reality the finest advertisement it is possible to have provided the whole-hearted support of town and country is forthcoming. With reference, to the agricultural sections it has become only too apparent that during the past few years farmers and others have not taken the same keen interest in the sections mentioned, as they-once did, with the result that entries have so declined in numbers as to seriously reflect upon the farming community's enthusiam for the welfare of their district. Through the- medium of A. & P. Shows and Winter Shows etc., farmers possess one of the best possible answers of effective prot> paganda concerning the productivity of their district and it seems regrettable, threfore, that such a powerful weapon for good should be so utterly ignored because it is so much easier not to exert oneself. If we have something really worth-while, and we have in the Bay of Plenty, it is wholly inadequate merely telling people; about it we have actually got to show them what we have, for seeing is believing. Now the Winter Show Executive is making strenuous efforts this year to re-kindle once again the old-time enthusiasm shown by the rural settlers in their undoubtedly bounteous district and I feel that in this matter the Young Farmers' Club Movement is also well equipped to take its share of responsibility in furthering this desirable end. It is always so much easier to sit down and watch the other fellow do the work but such an attitude is entirely inconsistent with good citzenship we have - not only a duty to ourselves to perform but we have also a r very clearly defined' duty to our neighbours as well. In other - words a public spirited outlook is at all times demanded of us. The approaching Winter Show offers members of Young Farmers' Clubs in this district a wonderful opportunity of taking a leading part in a real job of work the inspiration for which is the i general public welfare, and the reward the individual consci- ; ousness of a job well done. Send your entries along and just as " many as possible; encourage other farmers whom you come in contrast with to do the same and the agricultural sections will again be worth-while and you will have done your job. Whether ' personally you win or lose the issue is of trifling importance in comparison with the broader outlook Your District s Welfare. We sincerely trust that the above will serve as a stimulus, not merely tp the young farmers but to the older agriculturalists, who may have perhaps, been tempted to lose interest in the Show, and who thereby deprive it of their valuable and necesary support.
