VICIOUS VANDALISM
HOOLIGANS' DESTRUCTION C*F BUSH A correspondent of the Forest and Bird Protection Socictty has reported a case of vicious vandalism. "I feel it my duty to report to you still another Case of wanton destruction of our beautiful native bush y '' the writer states. "Recently we witnessed the deliberate setting alight of this lovely Mangapohue Natural Bridge Reserve. What was a Tew minutes before, a glorious patch of bush and ferns, is now a mass of chac red ruin. "This reserve is visited by hundreds of tourists through the year, but after the fire several parties were turned away as it was impossible to get through. "[ might mention that we did our best to stop this fire, but the paity dropped their matches and with roars of laughter retired to a nearby hillside to watch the fun-" The executive of the society is. making further inquiries about th" outrage. TOO MANY TARTANS Offering himself for service in the Christchurch Company of the New Zealand Scottish Regiment, a young man presented a birth certificate which proved that his name included the coveted "Mac.But this wa 3 not enough in his opinion, and he emphasised liis Scottish descent with u tartan tie and a tartan scarf. An., other recruit pointed out that the tie and the scarf were of different tartans. This however, did not disconcert the recruit, who airily stated that he was descended from both the clans whose tartans he Avone. HoweA-er, when asked to say just what clans the tartans represented, he hastily changed the subject.
