LIGHTING DOMAIN
GRANT FROM UNION CLUBS RAISING BALANCE OF COST The scheme for iloodlighting the Whakatane Domain for Rugby night practice was brought <1 slop nearer to success when the executive of th_? Whakatane Rugby Sub-Union, at its meeting at Tanea.tua on Tuesday nighty decided to make a grant of £10 towards the cost. It was reported that the Whakatane Clubs would give at least £25 in cash as well as tlie necessary poles. Mr L. Ormond (Referees) who had gone into the cost of the schemc at the request of the executive, said the total sum ncecssary was for four poles, four lights and wire. The Whakatane Club had offered to supply the poles, bringing the cost down by £20 and also offered £10' in cash. The Athletic Club olfered £li> and Star would give £5 now and would raise possibly another £.">. Old Boys had also discussed it and were prepared to work to raise some money, but as a new club they could not promise anything definite. Mr W. S. Henderson: That leaves a substantial balance, although the offer, is pretty good. Paroa and Poroporo said that they were not prepared to help. It would be of no benefit to them. RU AT OKI'S SUPPORT The Rev. W. Rangi (Ruatoki) said his Club would do wha't they could. Whakatane was the centre and improvements to the ground would probably mean a better representative team. He was not looking at the matter from a club viewpoint To test the feeling of the meeting he moved that the union grant £~> • Mr J. White (Whakatane) sa'd £5 was a very small donation.. The Union stood Jto gain a great deal, and since the clubs were giving practically £30 the Union should -ome somewhere close to that sum. Teams would probably play better football and the Union get better gates as a result said Mr Ormond The lights were costing just over £13 each. They would be mounted on '-35 foot which, if hardwood, would cost £0 each, but the WJiakatane players thought they could get bluegum poles from farmers. The club would hold a working bee on a Satur day morning and the poles would be erected tlt en. The Aviring would be done free by borough and power board employees in their own Mf.ie. The lamps would be of the mercury vapour type which were guar, anteed for 1500 lighting hours. Power would cost a minimum of 5s a moirfh the local clubs footing the bill. SCHEME A LITTLE ELABORATE It was a serious matter said Mr Henderson. Someone must take charge of the thing. £75 seemed a little bit too costly and the schemc to put four lamps round the ground too elaborate. Mr White said if the track was not sufficiently lit there would ne no support from the Athletic Association. Mr Henderson said someone must be responsible for the balance of £30, and he doubted if it would be possible to purchase the lamps with this outstanding. There was no doubt, that the Union would only need to have a successful rppresenta. tive team clear off the balance quickly. Mr Henderson asked if thore was else except the Union who would be prepared to take the responsibility. He would like to sec* the lights go in though. DELAY SUGGESTED Mr Rangi suggested holding the matter up until it was seen whether any more donations were coming in. Mr Ormond said that the estimate was actually bedrock for lamps and wire. Mr White moved that the Union donate £10, and Mr Rangi seconded the suggestion. Mr Gee asked whether the men would be prepared to use it? Taueatua players did use Itheir facilities. The motion was carried unanimous, ly on tlie show of hands. PERMISSION FROM DOMAIN BOARD Mr Henderson and Mr Ormond were appointed to interview the Domein Board to seek permission to floodlight the domain. There was a big balance said the airman but Mr Ormond said that at the next meeting he hoped to announce that the Whakatane tennis had a competition going to clear this off. ■ r
