STANDARD OF REFEREEING
RUATOKI CRITICISM
LOCAL MEN DEFENDED Spending at the executive meeting ■■•of the Whakatane Sub-Union at Tan•catua on Tuesday night the Rev W. Uangi (P.uatoki) said he wished to comment on the refei'eeing. He thought referees were not strict, -enough in the enforcement of their rulings. He hoped that the refen-es: representative would discuss the matter with bis association. Mr L. Ormond said the local referees association was in touch with the New Zealand Referees Assoeia. tion. As for tightening up on the rulings it must be remembered that a referee might be playing the advantage rule and thus look slow with the whistle. Mr W. S. Henderson said the Wha Ivatane referees delved into things pretty deeply. They lost no chance ■ of getting right down to bedrock. He agreed that the referees playing '- the advantage rule were often erit_ icised when they let knoek-ons go nnd spectators thought the breach had been missed. JUNIOR SELECTORS After a ballot Messrs J. White, K. Mita and L. Ormond were chosen as junior selectors by the executive of the Whakatane Rugby Sub-Union at its meeting at Taneatua on Tuesday night. The unsuccessful nomina tions were those of Mr C. Pile nnd J. Takarna. The voting was ■extremely close.
