BOROUGH REPORTS

STREETS AND FOOTPATHS The trimming and cleaning of drains throughout the borough will be finished within a few days said the Borough Foreman in his report which was before the council at its meeting on Monday. The footpath on the Whakatane Hotel froiVtage was completely broken up, remetallcd and relaid and sealed with two coats. The cable trench frontages of the Commerce Street business premises have been resealed. Soutar's Avenue intersections have been excavated and refilled with coarse metal, rolled and covered with fines. James Street footpath has been trimmed and top. dressed with fines. The recent rain brought down several substantial slips on Hillcrcst. These have been cleared, the metal being used on Soutar's Avenue and Benson's Road. This road has also been frequently graded. In King Street short concrete kerb bends have been set in at property entrances between Lovelock Street and Goulstone Road. The refuse dump has been graded and levelled. Pending instructions no dumping on new site will be carried out. Two new water connections have been made. This moiYth has been difficult as far as blowouts in water mains are concerned, 14 having been repaired. A number of meters have been taken out, being replaced with new meters while repairs and tests ar e made. ELECTRICAL WORK The new transformers for the Lovelock Street and the borough yard substations have now come 'to hand. The installation, of this equipment will be carried out as soon as possible to cope with the increased winter loading. When these two substations are completed the erection of the ik'w James Street one will ivput in hand, said Mr F. W. Lysaght Borough Electrical Engineer, in his report. The new secondary lines in Clifton Road, George Street and Waircre Street have now been completed. A stai t has been made with the erecting of a heavy low tension feeder in Lovelock Street to handle the supply from the new substation in this area. The necessary cable is now in the council's store for the new 3300 v-it line which is to be erected along Stewart Street and Hinemoa Street to carry a sup ply of current for the new James Street substation. NEW SERVICE LINES One new three phase service Mne has been, erected to supply power heating and lighting for the new block of shops in the Whakatane Hotel building and one single phase In Landing Road to supply a temporary saw etc. Referring to the main transmission line he said Ithe line alterations at Rj'de's corner necessary for the Public Works Department have now been completed and this work has been, charged to the department. The pumping plants have been in service every day during the mouth and are in fair order. The new plant for Hillcrest has now come to hand and will be installed as soon as possible. COWS IMPOUNDED He had impounded 17 cows during the month and 11 of these had been returned to their owners said Mr MPenny, borough inspector, in his report. There had been numerous complaints about cows on the roads added the inspector. He had issued warnings to owners that they W3re liable to a fine. In some cases he had had to warn owners a second time. He had dealt with 14 leaking taps during the month. He had spoken to garage owners in George Street regarding the leaving of cars across fthe footpath. Ho was also attending to parking at King Street Hall. Owners of dogs had been warned ! not to allow the animals to run loose in The Strand.
