STATE HOUSES
THE RATING PROBLEM LOSS TO THE BOROUGH The iu';4t'»t Juxnl for a new valiui. tion of the State housing blocks was stressed by councillors at Monday night's meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council, it was pointed out that the council would lose a great deal of revenue if rates were charged on the old basis for trie blocks of land now cut up and carrying dwellings. The matter was introduced by a letter from the Municipal Association which made it plain thast the department would only pay rates for the proportion of the year tenants were in State Houses. Cr A. J. Canning said the bouses should be under rating lor this year. If they missed- the rates it would be a big loss to the council. The a. mount, was fairly substantial. Mr D. V. Saunders said he had had nothing recent from the department though they had brought the matter of new vahiations before it. lie believc-d ithat some Government departments were hopelessly overwhelmed with work. (Laughter) The Mayor said the old rates would apply to the new houses until vhe revaluations were brought in.
