Influenza in various mild but un
pleasant forms is at present prevalent in Whakatane and the surrounding districts. Many business houses xire short handed, while the attendances at the majority of primary schools have been affected to vary, ing degrees. The complaint varies in form, the majority of those affected being confined to their beds just for a dav or two.
Although few cases appear to amount to anything like pneumonic influenza, some of the people attack, •ed by the complaint arc confined to toed for quite a while. In many canes of this character the sufferers have aching hacks, the muscular system' ,x>f the body apparently being the most affected. Sore throats are also
.common. About one.third of the children at —-the Whakatane primary school were ;away yesterday and the high school roll has also been heavily affected. Mostly it is the country children who have suffered. Members of the staff have also been on the sick list.
The sickness has not greatly affected the staff or patients at the "hospital, said the medical superintendent wheh approached. There were a few cases among the inmates and there have been slight complications in one or two cases. Ear -trouble was the most common.form.
