A NEW THOROUGHBRED STUD Mr Ken Austin, managing director of the Elderslie Stmi Company, the stock of 'vhieli has now been sold, has purchased a property at Flaxton, Canterbury, and intends forming a new stud there. He is fully conwr. sant with the pedigree strains most successful in New Zealand's racing arena, and the new venture is likely to prove highly successful. :S » S? « A PAYABLE MISTAKE At the Paei'oa and Bay of Plenty meetings Star Yaal won races. ]t has often been said that racegoers should never pretend to know too much. At the Avondalc fixture one country punter confounded Vanls Star with the first named, and the lenient weight 7.10 tempted him to back him to be extent of £1. The resultant dividend was over a score and a half, and in his jubilation he confided to a friend that he backed the winner on his Tauranga running. After being informed that he had mistaken the different horses he 'joy. fujlv replied "Well, I like making mistakes like that."' » 2: (£ SB A DIFFICULTY OVERCOME That well known Hobart institution trading under the title of "Tat_ tersall's" lias apparently met with .some difficulty in regard to the negotiation of New Zealand notes and postal notes, the exchange control regu, lations making it practically impos_ sible to use the New Zealand money received. It has been estimated by certain authorities in Wellington that last year about £127, 000 was sent, from this Dominion to Hobart, while 60 per cent came back to these shores in prize money, leaving 40 ner cieht for v.inners in other parts and TnttcrsalJ's commission. But, Tattersails quickly looked for ''a way out'' preferably to informing clients of any difficulty through exchange con. trol regulations, and the institution got over "the hurdle'' by opening a Bank account in Wellington from which New Zealand prizes "will be paid, leaving a balance to be invest, ed in this country's gilt edged securities, Tt is now understood that the Government will not institute a state lottery, but it has not yet been instrumental in such a decision having been arrived at.
INCREASED PRIZE MONEY The stakes for the Great Northern, Hurdles and Steeplechase to be run at Ellerslie in June have been illcreased to £1500 and £1700 respectively, an increase in caeh case of £250. This prize money should attract entries from all over the Dominion. SB S3 * # GOOD PRIZE MONEY The Waikato Racing Club will hold its next Te Rapa gathering on May 20th and 22nd, when the principal events will be the Te Rapa Steeplechase of £750, Waikato Steeple chase £500, President's Handicap £500 and Hamilton Hurdles £500. For the two days the prize money will total £5025. It would appear that with racing clubs there is jio financial crisis. * SB W RACING INTO FORM Mr W. H. Maria's Eastern Heir, a full brother to the Auckland Cup winner, The Buzzer, apparently thrives on racing. During this season he has competed in 31 events, and on his Whangarei form by winning two events. He is now better than ever. He handled the heavy going very capably, and should rae: prominently during the winter. In all probability lie will be at Tauranga in June. m «e IN TRTM TOR WINTER The Gisborne owned Psychology gelding, Small Boy, has been fairly successful in his recent efforts both on the flat and over hurdles. He i"ias shown capability in both depart, merits, but will be the most successful- in future. He is now, by reason j of his racing, in splendid form to commence his winter campaign in June, and as a real staver should be quite a payable proposition. sj! A FINE TRIBUTE The Te Awamutu breedcr.owner, Mr A. J. McGovern, returned from Australia on Friday. Referring to High Caste's running in the Champagne Stakes, he stated that half way through the running he was given no show whatever, but he came away with a briliant dash to win.
