Christmas Gifts for the Public

Small Assortments Of Perfumes Presents For Holiday Season A feature of the gifts offering for the womenfolk •■- this Christmas is the small assortment of wellknown overseas perfumes which have made a reappearance after the war years. Owing to import restriction however, only one fifth of the 1938 purchases are allowed into New Zealand and stocks will probably be quickly exhausted. ' Nylons (if available) .underwear, slippers, books, cosmetic sets, jewellery, hand-bags and silverwear always make appropriate presents for the average womap. Handkerchiefs wrapped in a variety of attractive packs also gain a following. For the holiday season there are many useful presents especially if those for whom! the presents are intended are going camping this summer. Picnic sets in pleasing leather cases, camp stools, thermos flasks, butter coolers, oil lamps and general camping equipment promise to make the life of this type of holidaymaker easy this summer—if he likes it easy. As usual, gifts for men—at reasonable prices—provide a problem for the womenfolk. Apart from the familiaj- items, spch as shirts., socks, ties, belts other itemp of clothing

and smoking requirements, there is not much in the novel line that can be bought for the male members of the household. Attractive items for the home are at last appearing again on- the market. Quite pretty little sets comprising cup, saucer and plate are available at fairly reasonable prices, while there are quite large varieties of sweet, butter and jam dishes. Towels, linen wear (sheets and pillow-cases) blankets and teatowels are always acceptable to the energetic housewife. Labour saving devices, such as electrical equipment, are always

welcomed although all these commodities are in the dearer price bracket. The biggest difficulty being encountered this Christmas by shoppers is the problem of finding a small gift (just sent as a thought) for warm acquaintances. Many shoppers find that it causes ernbarassment to send acquaintances expensive gifts, besides being extremely hard on the purge, so are compromising with the very attractive cards which have been made available to the .public this Christmas. Some very pleasing cards, moderately priced have been on sale for a number of weeks, and provide a dainty means of sending a Christmas thought. Calendars too. have taken very attractive forms this festive season.
