Sealing Maunganui Road
Provision For Vehicular Crossings
Council To Meet Half
Extra Cost
Provision has been made in the contract for sealing Maunganui Road between Pacific Avenue and Salisbury Avenue for the construction of vehicular entrances through the kerb and across the footpath, stated a letter from the Mount Maunganui Borough Council's consulting engineer, received at the monthly meeting of the council. The engineer asked if the council would ascertain how many crossings were required so that contractors could be supplied with full particulars. Ten feet wide crossings had been allowed for, he added.
Replying to the Mayor, Mr S. F. Newton, who asked about the legal rights of the council in financing such crossings, the Town Clerk, Mr G. E. Hutton, stated that the council could require the property owners to meet part or all of the extra cost involved. He recommended that the council should ascertain from the property owners how many crossings were required after fixing a basis for payment. The council decided to obtain the information requested by the engineer and to require those residents wishing to have crossings provided to meet half the extra cost of their construction.
