Katikati Memorial Hall

Committee’s Assets Now Stand At £5606 Likelihood Ot Government Subsidy (Times Correspondent) The balance sheet of the Katikati Memorial Hall Committee, present ed at the third annual meeting showed that the committee’s now stood at £5606. The aim of the committee is to raise £6OOO in rich and although £I3OO of this figure at present in hand represents materia assets, it is hoped the objective wil be reached during the coming year so that the building of the hall may be commenced without further delay.

The chairman, Mr H. Hunter stated that although the activities of the committee had been restricted during the past year, the revenue for the twelve months entUa July 31, 1949, amounted to £IOO9 Expenses for the year were not heavy, and the revenue was greatly assisted by the efforts of the "Missouri Minstrels” who had, with four concerts and three dances, raised £272. During the year, a gymkhana was held which, however, was not an outstanding success, due mainlv to an epidemic of measles in the district at the time.

The hall funds had benefited by aproximately £IOO from the gymkhana.

During the year some attempt had been made lay committee members to canvass the district for donations but due to the lateness in starting, the result was not encouraging and it was decided to wait until the spring of 1949, when it was hoped that the goal would be reached. Canvassing during the year had brought in the sum of £357, sundry donations amounting to £73! Mr Hunter expressed the opinion that the time was drawing near when the committee must look to outside advice for the furtherance of its project. During the year a subcommittee had met the Tauranga County Council with a view to applying for a Government subsidy. The council had written to the Department of Internal Affairs, outlining the committee’s case. The committee’s thanks were due to Mr E. M. Fox, county clerk, for his assistance. The department’s reply made no great alteration to the original plans. In conclusion, Mr Hunter thanked the retiring committee for its support and Mr Earner for the use of his bulldozer and men for levelling the section on which the hall was to be built. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr H. Hunter; secretary-treasurer, Mr A. F. Sherman; executive committee, Messrs W. A. P. Baker, H, B. Capamagian, H. J. Cooper, C. E. Grainger, G. B. Henry, E. S. Hooper, -M, T. Palmer, R. Sinel, G. A. Sherson, T. V. Sherson, A. J. Spedding, F. E. Spedding, G. B. Walford, J. E. B. Warn, and Mrs F. Smith; auditor, Mr F. H. So wry.
