WHITE REVERSING LIGHTS

MOTORIST REFUSED WARRANT OF FITNESS (P.A.) Christchurch, Sept. 22. White reversing lights on motor vehicles are illegal. A Christchurch motorist has been refused a warrant of fitness for his car at the Christchurch City Council's vehicle testing station because it has one of these lights. He has complained to the Automobile Asscciation (Canterbury), which will discuss the question at a conference of the South Island Motor Union on Friday. The member, Mr E. Stringer, wrote that the testing officers said a warrant of fitness would not be granted until the light was removed, because it was forbidden by the Transpert Department. Mr W. F. Harley told the council of the Automobile Association that reversing lights were essential on some difficult West Coast roads, and to suggest that they should be prohibited was "a lot of honey." Mr J. S. Hawkes (secretary) said the regulations provided for headlights, parking lights and a tail light, but not reversing lights.
