COSTS UP BY 70 PER CENT.
In a comment on the rise in the Australian basic wage the director of the unofficial right-wing Institute of Public Affairs said the institute regarded the steadily rising cost of production as disquieting. Rises in the basic wage in the past two-and-a-half years had cost almost £100,000,000 a year. The cost per unit of output in Australian manufacturing, he said, had increased by 70 per cent, since 1938-39.
