Western Railwaymen Dismissed In The Soviet Section
(Rec. 8.40 a.m.) London, Aug. 18. Trade unions in Western Berlin today ccmplained to the Western commandants about discrimination against their members employed on the Soviet-controlled Berlin railway. They said that about a fifth of the Western Sector railwaymen were to be dismissed and replaced by men from the Soviet Sector. Later messages said that over 100 Western Berlin railwaymen had, in fact, been given notice of dismissal. A Berlin correspondent says some observers believe that the Sovietcontrolled Berlin railway plans to replace all of the Western Sector railway depots with Eastern Zone workers to avoid the risk of future strikes.
