Wave Of Strikes In Finland
Communists Aim For Power Country's Economic Life Disrupted (Rec. 8.30 a.m.) London, Aug-. 19. In Finland a number of strikes were staged throughout the country today, involving about 45,000 people. The most serious stopage was that of dock workers at Helsinki, and 14 other ports. Only food ships were being worked. Elsewhere in Finland, building workers, lumber jacks', and tobacco workers are out. An agency message says that more strikes are expected to begin in the next few days. Finnish Government spokesmen say the strikes which are mostly for higher wages are led by Communists and have been expected for some time. They were similar to those in other European countries, where the Communists were out to seize power, the spokesman said and tne Government was ready to deal with them. Some reports say that the strike orders are not being obeyed everywhere, since most of the workers in the unions involved are non-Com-munists, but it is' believed that enough workers will come out to affect seriously Finland's economic life. Police in Northern Finland are reported to have clashed with striking lumber jacks, and there was a number of casualties.
