ELIZABETH STREET AREA
Sir,—After reading the report on the Chamber of Commerce's attitude towards the Elizabeth Street tip area as a light industrial area i have reached the considered conclusion that the said chamber's eyes can see no further than the keys of a cash register. I would ask: how many 'members of the Chamber of Commerce 'live in the immediate vicinity of the tip? How many of them would like factories built right next-door to their homes? How many of them have visited the playground of the Tauranga School and seen, over 900 children struggling for breathing space during breaks, in an area of about four acres? How many are aware that, in order to play organised football it is necessary to travel I to Nicholson Fie.d or the Domain? Wake up, parents, and show the money-blinded Chamber of Commerce that '"all that glitters is not gold." I think that the Borough Council should be commended upon its action in rescinding an ill-conceived decision, and I feel that all support should be given to any effort to_ make the area a public domain with sports areas.—l am, etc., "NOT A MIDAS." Sir—May I, on behalf of the Sea Scouts of Tauranga, join with others, in protest against the proposed development of the Elizabeth Street foreshore as a site lor light industries. As the headquarters of all Scout activities for girls' and boys are centred in this area, the increased traffic, consequent on the establishment of light industries there,' would inevitably increase the danger to the children. We also strongly support those who advocate beautifying the spot, thus adding immensely to the attractiveness of our beautiful town. We specially stress the added danger to your own children.—l am, etc., A. M. BENSLEY, Sea Scouter.
