FIFTY YEARS AGO
The following items of interest are taken from the Bay of Plenty Times of 50 years ago:— On glancing through the Survey report our eye was caught by a paragraph anent the new wharf at Rctorua, the lines read somewhat curiously, at first sight. The wharf, it appears, is built of stones and extends a length of eight chains into the lake and the officer in charge of the work reports: "There is now only a dep'h of eighteen inches of water at the end of the wharf, so that the level cf the lake should be raised." This appears to be a genuine case of "bringing the mountain to Mahomet." * # * * We have to acknowledge receipt from the composers, Messrs Garry (music and Dell (words) of a song entitled "The Song of Football." The publisher is Mr Joseph Hooker, of New Plymouth. The ditty has a ring about it that will probably catch on, at any rate with the admirers of the game and, at a popular concert, would be almost certain to bring down the house. A singular accident occurred- the day to a women at Temuka. She was sitting close to the fire when a vulcanite ornamental comb she was wearing in her hair spontaneously ignited. She receiver' slight burns at the back of her head and two women who assisted in the removal of the comb had their fingers burned.
