Instances Related By Mr J. G. Tennent
A correspondent, Mr J. G. Tennent, writing to the Bay of Plenty Times in connection with divining stated that he had been interested in several articles recenty published in this paper on the subject.
"I am interested in 'water divining' as I have had considerable experience in the use of that particular power over a period of about eight years," he stated in remarking that he had frequenty to empoy a water diviner and estimated failures at four or five per cent. He had been engaged in supplying water services to dairy farms, chiefly in Taranaki and latterly in the Bay of Plenty, and has never lost his belief in divining for that purpose.
Stating that he could enumerate hundreds of instances of the success of the water diviner, Mr Tennet referred to three cases of which he possessed knowledge. In one of these a well ran dry on a farm in Taranaki and a diviner was called in. The well (70 feet deep) was about 400 yards from the cow shed. The diviner traced a strong flow of water running from near the dry well towards the cow shed. Finally a bore was sunk at the corner of the cow yard and was rewarded with a very strong supply of good water 20ft from the surface. Other wells in the district averaged 70 to 90 feet deep.
Four of the writer's friends, lie continued (one a diviner and a stranger to the district) were discussing the subject at a tennis court and the diviner was asked to demonstrate. He used a forked slick and walked the length of the court, pausing a moment near the centre. Turning back he paused over the same spot again and then he walked at right angles across the court. He then said that there was a weak, flow of water under the court not very deep down. Actually there was a half-inch water pipe two feet below the surface. At the United Dairy factory, Wooclville, stated Mr Tennent, an old bore which had run dry was deepened to over 500 feet without result. A diviner was called in and located water about 100 feet away from the old well where a bore produced a strong" flow of pure water 100 feet down. Stating that people with this power are in a greater or less degree affected by the presence of underground water, Mr Tennent recorded how that in Palmerston North a man suffered ill health for several years. Doctors could not diagnose his trouble and a diviner out of curiosity visited his house where he located a stream of water passing under his bedroom. The resident moved his bedroom to the other side of the house and immediately regained his health. Mr Tennent stated that he did not agree wi,th Dr Onglev of Ota go University, who discredits the power of diviners. Experience in the location of water by accredited diviners, he said, had proved that in most cases thev were successful.
