FEELINGS RUN HIGH OVER SPAIN

DEBATE IN UNO , ASSEMBLY Diplomatic Relations Issue Polish Delegate’s Strong Opposition London, Mav 16. The United Nations General Assembly today began its debate on the resolution to allow full diplomatic relations with Spain. The Brazilian delegate, who was one of the sponsors of the resolution, urged the Assembly to lift its ban which he described as an empty gesture which harmed the United Nations members who complied w sl h it but not General Franco. The Polish delegate spoke strongly against the resolution and called its four sponsors, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Bolivia an unholy quartet. He accused the United Kingdom and the United States of trying to whitewash the Snanish government, and he warned Latin Americans not to let their Spanish ancestry give them a feeling of affinity with what he called the gangster regime of Franco. The Czechoslovak delegate made a similar speech and appealed for the rejection of what he termed “this pro-fascist resolution”. A United Nations correspondent says that there are many more speeches to come and the debate is likely to take up the rest of the day. This means that the main political issues still await decision. The future of the Italian colonies is not likely to come up before tomorrow.
