DELAY TO ENGLISH MAILS
CHIEF POSTMASTER'S CONCERN
LIGHTERING 759 BAGS IN STREAM
(P.A.) Auckland, April 21. "I was rather disappointed that the Waiwera, after berthing yesterday, went back into the stream at seven o'clock this morning, taking with her 759 bags of mail which we v/ill have to lighter off," said Mr D. J. B. Walker, chief postmaster, at a meeting of the Aucidand Chamber of Commerce this morning. He added that the Norfolk's mails were taken off last w™k "t considerable expense to the Department.
"We have received an assurance from the Post Office in England that they have gone into the question to ensure that in future letters and second-class mail will be stowed separately, and that at least firstclass mail will be accessible," he said.
Ships in sight now would he held up for weeks and the Department, for some time, would have to face the question of lightering the mails. It was a question of hqw much the Department was justified in spending. The Waiwera arrived from Liverpool early yesterday morning.
