WEIGHT OF AXLES AND WHEELS
ROAD CLASSIFICATION REGULATION AMENDMENT FOLLOWS S.M.'S DECISION (P.A.) Wellington, April 21. Following a ruling of a magistrate that the weight of the wheels and axle of a vehicle should not be taken into account when assessing the axle weight of heavy vehicles on classified roads, an amendment to the Heavy Motor Vehicles Regulations rlas'been gazetted. The amendment makes it clear that the weight which applies is the weight transmitted to the road surface by the tyre or tyres, thus including the weight of the axle and wheels. Another alteration to the regulations amends the speed limit for buses and service cars on the open road. The speed is increased from 35 to 40 miles an hour, it being considered that improved springing on modern service vehicles warrants the extra speed.
