Signs Of Welcome To Tauranga
Erection On Approaches
To Town
Permission Given To Proceed
It was a common practice in many towns to erect "Welcome" signs on the approaches to the town said Mr €. Davey, to the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce. Mr Davey said that he had raised the issue at the last meeting because he thought it to be a matter worthy of consideration. This was a tourist town, continued the speaker, and it must be advertised. Mr Davey stated that he was of the opinion that if the town was to take a person's money it should at least give them some thanks. . '.
Such a sign would eventually develop a. communal spirit in the town and Would, he thought, be a pleasure for those .returning to Tauranga after an absence. The type of sign he had in mind was a small placard bearing the words "Welcome to Tauranga". as the chamber had opposed hoardings in the past and the expense of a large sign was not warranted.
Mr Davey told the chamber that he had been in touch with the district engineer and had obtained permission to erect signs on condition that they would not interfere with the work of line crews or traffic, that they would be removed at the request of the district office and that the chamber accept all responsibility for the signs. ■' He was willing to do the work required for the erection of the signs stated Mr Davey, and suggested that the signs be in black on white, or vice-versa.
In response to a question by Mr M. R. Jackson as to whether the householders concerned would agree to. having these signs outside thnir gates it was pointed out that the signs would be quite attractive and there should not be any objection raised. ' Mr Davey suggested that the signs should be placed on the three approaches to the town, that in the vicinity of the Hairini bridge, near the race course, and since Otumoetai was to be included in the be rough of Tauranga, the third should be on the main road near there. It was then decided that the work be proceeded with.
