WATER OVER DAM SPILLWAY

NOT WASTED, ENGINEER EXPLAINS

PUBLIC’S ENQUIRIES AT KARAPIRO

As water for electricity is scarce, why does it frequently pour over the' spillway at the Karapiro hydroelectric dam? This question has puzzled many visitors to the dam. The explanation is not simple, but an official of the Hydro-Electric Department recently put it in the simnlest possible terms. “The higher the level of Lake Karapiro, the greater the power extracted from the water,” he said. “If the lake level is raised, a small percentage of the water is wasted, but what i's left gives greater power.”

Such a wastage of water was not usual, but it did happen occasionally, said the official. It also occurred, but less frequently, at Arapuni. The Department expected inquiries from the public, but it was difficult to explain the apparent wastage to anyone not familiar with the technicalities of the subject.
