HIGHER MARRIAGE ALLOWANCE
OFFICERS AND MEN OF ROYAL NAVY
INCREASES UP TO 6/A DAY (N.Z. Press Association) A statement was made *in the House of Commons by the Minister of Defence (Mr A. V. Alexander) concerning the pay scales of ratings only, and marriage allowances of both officers and ratings. The scheme, however, does not affect locally entered personnel on own pay codes, or Women s Services. Separate consideration has been given to these. The increases in pay also do not apply to National Service entrants until after 12 months service, and the increases in marriage allowance will not apply to National Service entrants at all. The daily increases over the existing rates paid to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines (with the exceptions stated) range from 6d a day in the case of Able Seamen and Marines Ist Class, to Is 6d a day for Petty Officers, Chief Petty Officers, Sergeants and Colour Sergeants R.M. and Royal Marine N.C.O’s. above the rank of Colour Sergeants. Similar increases are to be apnlied according to equivalent rating held, to rating pilots and aircrews (Naval Aviation).
Weekly increases in marriage allowances amount to 7s for Leading Seamen or a Corporal (R.M.) and below, 9s for Petty Officer and Sergeant R.M.. 10s for Chief Petty Officer and Colour Sergeant R.M.,
and 11s for Royal Marine N.C.Os., in receipt of marriage allowances at Army Warrant Officer rate. Officers aged 25 and over will receive an increase of 6s a day marriage allowance if they are not in married quarters and 3s a day if they are' so accommodated. Married officers under 25 will receive the highest ‘other rank’ marriage allowance.
